The Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions (RMS) group is a Global Business Unit within Covidien. RMS systems are used to monitor, diagnose and treat respiratory disease and sleep disorders, and they provide life sustaining ventilation and oxygen support for patients.
Manager, Software Engineering
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Lead internal and external teams engaged in design and development of patient monitors for the critical care and the homecare markets. An ideal candidate for this position would need to have strong technical background, demonstrated managerial courage in a leadership role and have the ability to set department goals aligned with business objectives. Ability to effectively manage diverse group of engineers while fostering a team environment is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Manage Software Engineering functional deliverables for multiple concurrent projects from inception to completion. Ensure that product development milestones are met by anticipating issues, managing resources and risks. 2. As a key member of the technical leadership team provide product design leadership by recommending and implementing analog and digital electronics, electronic architectures, and utilities. Takes pride in hands-on contribution and does not hesitate to participate as an individual contributor when needed. 3. Work with other functional and technical managers to execute R&D deliverables and support product launches within established schedules and budgets. 4. Support manufacturing and service organizations with installed-base product issues and provide guidance in choosing appropriate remedies based on engineering evaluation. 5. Ensure that design choices support product requirements, verification methodologies satisfy regulatory requirements and product development procedures are followed within program timelines. 6. Define responsibilities, assign resources, create, maintain and monitor project schedules, budget, and open issues lists, participate in design review meetings and report on status, activities and plan. Create a positive, energetic work and team environment. 7. Review and approve critical deliverables such as Software Requirements Specifications, Software Design Documents, Verification protocols and reports, DFMEA and Risk Assessments.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Responsible for training, development and coaching of staff. Encourage and develop reports so they advance in their technical expertise. 2. Ensure adherence to product specifications, industry standards, and quality and regulatory procedures and requirements. 3. Create innovative technical solutions which lead to the development and introduction of new technologies, products, and processes that support ongoing business objectives. 4. Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: BSEE/CS and/or MSEE/CS
Experience: 10+ years of experience, minimum 3 years of which are in a management / leadership role.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications: Prior experience in designing patient monitors, preferably for pulse oximetry, is highly desirable.

Skills/Competencies: Must have the ability to manage multiple priorities, decompose complex technical problems, make design decisions and take appropriate action that leads to acceptable solutions. Experience in using software development, configuration management, problem reporting and testing tools. Design experience and understanding of engineering principles involving real time embedded systems design is required. Experience with Real Time Operating Systems is required. Experience in Object Oriented Design is required. Experience in C/C++ programming is required.
Other Skills: Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills are required.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE: Position reports to the Director Patient Monitoring R&D
WORKING CONDITIONS: Performs work in engineering development labs, model shops and normal office environments.
